nice post. unfortunately, I think college officiating is going to continue to...
...move towards a model used in the pros. They seem more intent on managing the game rather than blowing their whistles whenever they see an infraction. If my team is super aggressive in guarding your team and we foul you 25 times in the first half, there's no way in today's college game that any ref will call all 25 fouls or continue to call fouls until my team backs off. Instead of forcing my team to adjust our style of play by blowing fouls on us every time, we see the refs adjusting their style of officiating to fit the play on the court. Games become really ugly to watch with good offensive players like Tyler Haws getting mugged constantly.

I also think they spend too much time following "the book" on particular teams or players. Young players make mistakes and garner reputations for things early in their careers that they eventually grow out of, dumb fouls, reaching, etc. Refs then note this and it becomes a reputation that he will never get away from no matter how much he improves or progresses. BYU seems to have a reputation now regarding their bigs and I see them get called for quick, easy fouls while opposing bigs do similar things and it doesn't get called nearly as much.

Case in point, Brandon Davies would use his shoulder in the post to bang into the chest of Brad Waldow and back him down. He got called a lot for this, especially when Waldow would flop on purpose. Yet you watch Waldow do the same thing to Byu bigs and they can either let him ram-rod them down under the basket for an easy layup (and still get a foul called) or put up some initial resistance and get called for a foul. It's a joke.

I don't like where the profession of officiating has gone. I had hoped we would see it cleaned up a bit after Ed Rush got nailed for bribing and intimidating his refs in the Pac 12 to alter outcomes of games that the Arizona Wildcats were in because he wanted their HC tossed. For every cockroach you see there are 25 more you don't see. I think that just shows the tip of the iceberg and that most fans would be shocked if they could be a fly on the wall in the referees locker-room and hear them discuss officiating the game.
