When they start leaving the house on a regular basis and you have to coordinate
transportation with them is my opinion. That's when my boys got phones. My daughter got one at the age of 11 just because we had an extra around the house and she was starting 6th grade at middle school and "all of her friends have one." I think she has used it twice.

I like that all the YM in our ward have them so it's easy to communicate with them through texts. So I would say 12.
