When my kids got to the age that they started to frequently go to friends' house

we got an extra phone. When a kid went somewhere, they grabbed the phone and took it with them. When they got home, they put the phone back on the charger where it would wait until next time one of the kids needed it.

We didn't get any of our kids their own phone until they got to high school and started having after school activities.
