"What percentage of blame falls on players vs coaches is up for debate"...
...I wasn't inferring it's exactly 1/4 to 3/4. I do feel there's room for debate but so much more of this is controlled by the coaches imo.

I understand that recruiting is a 50-50 proposition and I don't hold a case like Jake Heaps against Bronco and his staff because we can see that not only did he fail at BYU but he failed everywhere else too. But there are also many examples of kids who are failing at one school and then get a fresh start somewhere else and they flourish.

A recent example is QB Brad Sorenson. He redshirted in 2009 but was told by coaches he had no future at BYU so he transferred, prospered at another school and was drafted in the NFL by the San Diego Chargers. This occurred simultaneously while BYU coaches had their huge man-crush going on with Riley Nelson and had no eyes for any other QB on the roster. As a result of that we wasted one of the best defenses in BYU history and blew what could have been a very special seasons in 2012 due to terrible QB play.

I think Coaches hold a lot more cards than the players do. They control the schemes, who plays and who sits, they control who gets recruited, who gets cut, what positions players play, they control game-plans, play calling during games, in-game adjustments, practices, they have a significant impact on team morale, through the media they can influence heavily (somewhat) the public perception of a player, etc.

Anyways, I don't think we're that far off in our perspective on this. I just lean more to the coaches on this for the reasons above. Good discussion though and you brought up good points that I don't disagree with.
