Mendenhall tried the same tactic in the first overtime when Elliott was lining up a 54-yarder to tie the game and send it to another overtime period.

The whistles blew, signalling the timeout, just as Elliott swung his leg and shanked it badly.

He said after the game that the respite gave him time to get comfortable.

"You know they called time out and that gave me a little bit of a chance to get focused up and get a couple more kicks in to get my leg loose," Elliott said."
