...2 of the real studs in this class are Mika Tafua and Dayan Lake and both have de-committed and/or opened their recruiting. We might hang onto Lake because he waited so long to do it but Tafua has been getting recruited for a while now by some really good schools like USC and Oregon. I don't have a good feeling about his signing with BYU.
As a matter of fact, I don't get a good feeling on a lot of the good LDS kids still in play for BYU (or the non-LDS players for that matter). I don't think we've done a very good job competing for these kids or making them feel like we really want them (common theme several have commented in tweets, etc).
This imo is a real downside of Bronco's approach to recruiting. He doesn't like catering to kids and I think this year it will bite him in the rear with a lot of good kids we could've had but will lose.
I don't think we get Covey (USU), Reid (Stanford) or Vanderbilt (flips to USU), and of the uncommitted players with significant recruiting interest still out there, the only one I think we've improved our position with is maybe Mufi Hunt. Seems like coaches have made a connection with this kid late and gotten into his good graces. We might sign him.
As for Tafua and Lake, I feel pretty good with keeping both but in Lake's case, he's a pretty good corner with above average speed and quickness, guys like that are hot commodities and I wouldn't be surprised if he got a really good P5 offer out of the blue when a school like Oregon, ASU, etc loses out at the last minute on a corner they were counting on and need a good one at the last second and offer him.
I don't think this year's LOI day will be nearly as good as last year's was. I kind of think the opposite happens and we get very few good surprises and a lot of disappointing surprises and maybe don't even approach our 25 scholly limit.
