Kind of an up and down list
I agree about unnecessary CGI, though. I was a big fan of del Toro's decision to go with make up as much as possible in Hellboy. Not a great movie, but decent, and the fact it was Ron Perlman himself as the lead, rather than motion capture, made a huge difference. The use of CGI in I Am Legend, for example, was totally inexplicable. Why not use real people there? Compare that to 28 Days Later and it's terrible.
