BYU hadn't really faced tough competition this season. Our first full-on match of the season was supposed to be against Air Force the week before, but it was cancelled. All the other games we've played up to then has open substitutions. That meant we were going up against one of the top four sides in the country in our first full-on game of the season. St. Mary's, on the other hand, has already played one or two mens' clubs this season. They were ready for us. So a slow 1st half for us is perfectly excusable, I'd say.

The beautiful thing is Coach Smyth was able to make the necessary adjustments during halftime, and we came out swinging. We scored our first try of the half in less than a minute, and we went on to tie the score in less than five if I recall correctly. It took SMC most of the half to readjust, but by then it was too late.
