The problem with your point is the fact that Ken Starr (yes, the same Ken Starr from the Clinton stuff) was the chief legal counsel for the Prop. 8 coalition; which, I'm sure you know, was most heavily backed by the church. But by the time all of the realignment was occurring he was already president and chancellor at Baylor.
