I mostly agree w/ you, but I can sort of understand the "espionage" concerns...
...if I were a coach, I would be legitimately concerned w/ sending game plans and plays along w/ transferring players to a future opponent -- especially in football.
I imagine this would also be a concern in basketball, although I would thing to a much lesser extent.
That said, I still think it's pretty awful to put roadblocks up in front of players who are just looking for more PT.
