Of course every team studies a lot of film, but especially in the NFL...
...there are all kinds of stories about how teams will pursue and sign free-agents just to get first hand insight into opponents' tactics and preparations -- and that's in the NFL where even more film is studied.
I agree w/ you, though, that the interests of the student athlete should trump those concerns -- I'm just pointing out that those concerns have some legitimacy to them -- it's not necessarily just pure spitefulness.
