The surplus is set aside for 1) rainy day, 2) anticipation of paying stipends
and 3) projects that are on the drawing board.

Currently, the baseball program wishes to go from grass to turf, that's not cheap. Of course we all know about the modifications of the Marriott Center and practice facility.

We all know that LES needs upgrades, even a paint job would be nice. I am sure these are a just a few items being looked at requiring funding.

Naturally there are always coaching staffs, medical staff, trainers, etc. to take into account.

When athletes begin receiving stipends, this will place a huge financial stress to the budget. I haven't heard the exact amount each athlete will receive. I would guess it will cost BYU between $1.3 million to $4.0 million a year. Stipends could run even higher as BYU has stated they will be competitive in the market.

In an October 22, 2014 article by Bryan Fischer (College Football 24/7), states Texas AD is set to pay stipends of $10,000 per athlete, or $6.0 million per year.

With so many schools running in the red, this new requirement of stipends could alter the landscape. Unless the rule has been changed, it states that no school in the same conference can pay more than the other schools. Meaning, Texas cannot pay more than Iowa State. There may be a clause related to cost of living, but if I remember correctly all schools have to agree on the same amount?
