My friend's wife suffers from depression. It is definitely hereditary
based on the stories she has told me.

She eats right. She exercises. She reads her scriptures daily with her family and has family prayer. To the outside world, she is some super mom, super primary president or RS president or whatever calling she has. Her OCD make her go absolutely bonkers on her callings. Insane imbalance. Up all night (depression also causes insomnia).

She tells the bishop that she has no testimony and tells him she wants to leave her family and husband (an amazing man). A wise bishop identifies the problem (depression) and sends her to a counselor and a doctor. She gets the treatment she needs. An amazing metamorphosis occurs. She can finally sleep. She can again find joy again in many things in life. She is cured, no longer wants to leave her family.

To suggest that people need to get out and exercise, eat right, etc., comes from someone that has never had anyone close to them with clinical depression. The opinion is based on ignorance - i.e., uninformed, is a bit dangerous, but can be changed. Very easy to fix.

Exercise and eating right fixes clinical depression as well as it fixes cancer. Can you imagine if my friend's wife went to her bishop and instead he had told her to exercise, eat right, read her scriptures and pray? My guess is that she would have taken her life. When someone who is depressed reaches out for help, they are typically at the end of their rope.

Instead, because of a wise bishop, she has gained a victory over her condition and has joy every day of her life, when before, she had none.
