I think that is usually the opinion of uninformed, self righteous...
...passive-aggressive types. Those are the types to make depressed people, who already don't feel adequate or worthy because of their disease, feel even worse about themselves spiritually. People who know the truth, know that praying, studying, attending church, and keeping close to the spirit help to support the treatment of the disease, but are not the treatment itself. I would say that they are necessary adjunctive therapies. But I definitely agree with those who have said that you can't fast and pray your way out of these mental illnesses. They are not based on righteousness or lack thereof, they are physiologic. You can't "snap out of it" anymore than a diabetic can snap out of being diabetic.

I think you're right. It would probably be the vast minority of LDS mental health professionals that would make depression a matter of righteousness.
