One G5 team has to go to a NY6 game; that is a requirement. A hypothetical 11-2 CSU team with a victory over BSU in the MWC championship would have the most attractive resume of any G5. 12-1 Marshall would be the only team with a better record, but their resume was thin. The College Football Playoff Committee would have (or at least should have) rewarded this hypothetical CSU team.
As for Travis Wilson, his game against CSU was good enough to earn him MVP honors. He rushed 11 times for 91 yards and 3 TDs; he was 17 for 26 passing, with 1 TD and 1 Int. If that qualifies as "lousy," I think your standards are too high. And Utah did, in fact, win by more: the actual score was 45-10 (not 42-10).
