with the game, learn schemes, etc. The mission first thing actually gives players and BYU more flexibility. I actually think less would stay 5 years than previously. Here's why:
1. Under the old scheme, players would come for their freshman year and 90% of them would not play. Then most have to take a year to get back in shape after the mission anyway, so they would almost always use their redshirt. There's 2 years of elegibility gone with nothing to show for it.
2. Under the new scheme, their freshman year and their "get back into shape" year are one in the same (i.e., they don't waste 2 years instead of 1). Then they have a better chance of contributing year 2, 3 and 4. Those with NFL aspirations would have an easier time leaving after year 3 or 4 (and thus not using a redshirt year) than under the old scheme.
