We need something to energize the Cougar fan base.
We aren't getting into the Big 12 - not an option.
We aren't getting into any other P5 conference - not an option.
Going back to the MWC feels like taking a step backwards.
Recent games with American foes have been exciting and competitive (Memphis, UCF, Houston). Expect the same from Cincinnati and ECU this fall.
Now is the perfect time. The SEC and ACC have recently declared BYU as "P5" level for scheduling purposes. Without having played a single game, it's hard to justify retracting that statement in the public arena just because BYU joins the American.
Get Boise St. to come with and we ensure:
1) Meaningful games in October and November, including BYU-Boise St. rivalry.
2) Bowl options - New American with Boise St. and BYU will likely land familiar bowls like - Las Vegas, Poinsettia, Hawaii, Armed Forces
3) More likely to keep the ESPN contract
If we bring SDSU and Fresno along as well, BYU can play yearly games in California, Texas, and Florida - reaching our nationwide fans and still getting most games on ESPN.
IMO, BYU should seriously consider joining the American conference with Boise St., and perhaps a couple of others.
