The two leading theories seem to be:
1. Because of BYU's experiences with the MWC and the mtn, BYU wanted to make sure all the facts and details were openly discussed and asked some rather difficult questions.
2. Because right at that time, it came out that UT and OU were having talks with the 12-Pac conference, BYU got spooked a little that the conference would fall apart. That would leave BYU adrift with nowhere to go but...gulp...back to the MWC.
