Sure it's possible. It's also possible that BYU were angels to deal with and
the Big 12 decided to choose somebody else. There are a lot of conflicting reports on this, but it seems to me that most of the negative stuff about BYU is coming from people who have an axe to grind - the Big East after we told them "no thanks", SDSU who was competing for our spot in the Big East, Comcast TV Execs who we sued after they screwed us over in the mtn TV deal.
But I'm willing to accept the possibility that it was BYU who screwed up here. I just won't treat it like a fact as some seem to want to do.
