MISSIONS PLAY A LARGE ROLL IN THE DRAFT
Remember the great years of Coach Edwards saw only approximately 25% of the team serve missions. Therefore, there were more "younger" drafted players from BYU. Yes, some RMs were also drafts but the vast majority did not serve - same with basketball.

Today, the team is comprised of 85% RMs, raising the age of players and reducing their chances in the draft.

NFL teams can bring in BYU players as free agents with little risk to them (team) in terms of expense. Drafting players increases the monetary risk and thereby it is prudent to bring in younger players with similar skills and talent vs. drafting older players they can hire as free agents.

This is no different in today's workforce. When confronted with two applicants: candidate #1 is seasoned with 15 years of experience while bringing home $125k a year; while candidate #2 has been in the workforce for less than five years and brings home $75k a year. I can guarantee you candidate #2 will be hired over candidate #1. Why, 1) savings in salary; 2) longer term potential with the company, etc.

I think seeing these great athletes perform at high levels is a direct reflection on the coaching staff.
