also player age was less of a critical success factor during Lavell's era
Back then the NFL just wanted football players and if you were a "football player" and produced on the field you got a look. Now, the NFL is such an exact science that it's a lot more rare that the NFL takes a chance on a player unless they have a really high ceiling and they can check all the boxes (young, fast, big, strong, etc) and actual on the field production doesn't matter as much.
