That was step 1 for me also.
I think, if I remember correctly, that the next thing I had to do was to put two things into perspective (both of which are complex):

1) Winning and losing. How important, in my mortal existence, is a win? How bad, compared with many other bad things that can happen (like the near death of a child, or cancer, or loss of a job, etc...), is a loss? Also, sometimes, the better team loses (i.e. upsets can happen and do happen all the time). Causation in winning/losing is very complex and very multi-faceted; rarely, if ever, can you boil it down to a single or few factors. There's more that could be listed, but the acknowledgment of these things helps me put losses into perspective.

2) BYU football (well, all BYU sports really). BYU is such a unique sporting environment--different than most other programs. We have some awesome pluses, but we also have some handicaps. The pluses, I've come to believe, in many cases, don't always out pace the handicaps. I believe, in general we have good coaches, despite errors in judgment from time to time; however, because of our handicaps, I think sometimes that from top to bottom (i.e. two- and three-deep), we don't have the quality of players that the bigger programs do--and it reflects in our year-after-year records.

I also believe that BYU's sports mission differs from the missions of other universities. I know some get really frustrated that BYU does not go all-in on sports, and some advocate if that is the case, we should just get out. I don't feel this way. From a sports fan of BYU, I will take what I can get and always hope for the best.

I continue to hope for sporting success, but I've tempered my expectations due to the environment that is BYU sports. While I believe we are capable of magical seasons, I believe that probability indicates usually a moderately successful season in the area of wins and losses.

I choose to approach every game with, at a minimum, a belief that we can win--sometimes despite great odds. And when we lose when we are expected to win, that's tough, but I know that upsets happen--even to the best of teams.
