I never said Jake Arrieta is one of the best ever. He has 51 career victories. LOL. He would need 10 more seasons like this year to start getting into that discussion. This isn't a career look. It is now. 2015.
Look, Jake Arrieta is top 5 in baseball in all of these categories: Wins, ERA, BAA, strikeouts, WHIP, CG, and shutouts. No other pitcher in baseball is in the top 5 in all those categories. Additionally, he is the Major League leader in wins and 2nd in ERA (the most important categories). The others are great and fluff....and Arrieta is dominate in all.....but he excels in those that matter the most. That makes him the best in the game right now. He wins ball games. He gets batters out. He's efficient. And he doesn't need a pitcher's park to make his numbers look better. He does much of this at Wrigley Field. LOL.
Arrieta is 11-1 with a microscopic ERA of 1.07 in his last 14 starts. Additionally, he doesn't do it pitching in a venue like Dodger Stadium which traditionally lowers ERAs by up to half a run. Look at Kershaw's and Greinke's ERAs home and away....both this year.....and their careers. Enough said. They are great pitchers wherever they pitch....but we see a dramatic fall in their numbers when they pitch in other ballparks. That's historically what most pitchers see when you compare their career numbers at Dodger Stadium as opposed to the rest of the league.
You are a tough cookie and you'll keep trying. But I'll keep the beatdowns coming.
