Check the Fee Schedules for both potential Credit Unions & Banks
That way you can get idea of what to expect. They should have them available as required by law.

They'll both generally offer the same services, but you'll have different fees based on account type. As others have mentioned, you'll want to keep in mind the ATM availability and online services. If you can demo the online banking for each one, you might be able to avoid the banks or credit unions that have a sub par user interface and bill pay system. The bigger the bank or CU, in general, the better the online services since they have big money to implement the best systems.

I like Wells Fargo, have never had an issue with them. When I've dealt with Credit Unions, I've generally not been happy with branch availability. Doing business inside a branch is going by the wayside, but when you need one, you really need one. With Credit Unions you can use the national network to do most basic transactions anywhere in the nation and use any credit union ATM you want, which is a huge perk.

I think I've been in the same position as you are now and I would caution against a knee jerk reaction to dump your bank. Fees are not fun, but there is a lot of benefit to using the large banks and their resources. On the other hand Credit Unions are a good option for general checking and savings and provide a national network for ATM usage.
