Seriously. As evidenced by many onside kicks or muffed punts, when

players try to recover a ball, anything can happen. If Wright had tried to grab it, maybe he muffs it and it flops around in the end zone more and anything can happen. If he tries to let it do it's thing, maybe it takes a funny hop and anything can happen. By batting the ball out, it takes away any possibility for a lions recovery and that's an issue.
