I started the sport this past year too. My first race was St. George 70.3.
I've learned some stuff in my training in the past year though. In training for the race last year, I was too focused on slimming down. I lost 30 pounds, but with it I think I lost a lot of my power. It really comes into effect when you switch from the 56 mile bike over to the run. Unless you really need to lose some fat, I would just focus on building up your stamina for the race. That St. George run, right after a good climb through snow canyon is brutal.

I am just starting up my training for May, and I'm going about it much differently than last year.
