Sample size is small, but my last two vehicles were late 90's Toyota 4runners.
Paid $7300 in 2007 for the first one with 138k on it. I beat the front end to death offroading (lots of fishing and hunting), so I replaced struts, tierods, bushings, etc, and also replace the timing belt and water pump myself for about $350 in parts. Drove it until I got T-boned 2 years ago. She was at 290k and was still running strong. Never once took it in for a service. Changed the oil every 5-7500k. Never once had the tranny looked at (or had a tranny issue period). That sucker would have ran well past 325k and I treated it like crap.

After my accident I worked hard to find a deal and paid $5000 for the same body style with 148k miles on it. I'm close to 190k now and literally have not done a single thing to it except change the oil a few times. It is tight as can be. Doesn't burn or leak anything. I fully expect to put 15-20k/year on it and drive it for at least the next 5-8 years. And when that motor dies I'll find another junk yard motor with 150k on it and drive the thing for another decade. Those trucks are absolutely bulletproof and don't cost anything to maintain.

I understand what a lot of people are saying. Their cars don't last that long and cost a lot to maintain past 100k miles. But that's because people aren't buying reliable cars. I probably sound like a Toyota advertisement, but I am a massive believer in the brand. Won't ever touch anything else.
