Dallas failed to land big-named free agents before their championship, and won
despite that fact. I think that shows that you don't have to be a major free agent destination to win it all. The Spurs have won 5 championships and this last off-season was the first time they have landed a major free agent. I'm not arguing that free agency isn't important. Being a major free agent destination loosens everything else up and makes it easier to complete trades. However, look at how many major free agents have actually signed with other teams and look at those teams. LeBron is virtually the only example of a major free agent making a huge difference. The Knicks landed major free agents, and they have been a disaster. The Lakers haven't landed a major free agent since Shaq. If you are a team that relies on free agency to win a championship, you are doing it wrong and will fail. You win championships by drafting well, establishing good organizational culture, having outstanding coaching, and rounding out your depth with free agency and trades.
