Zach Morris is Right. I personally know, and am related to one of the directors that was in the meeting
when the decision was handed down. This relative is involved/in charge of any sound/media thing that happens at BYU (oversaw the installation of all the screens at all BYU facilities including Marriott center... is at every game, does stadium of fire, woman's conference, etc). There was a company that offered to do the the whole thing, including any renovations needed to install it, although he said that was not an issue. They wanted to put in screens the size of the one at Texas. This was presented, discussed, and my uncle was personally in the room when they explained that they would go with a more medium size to avoid the appearance of being "too elite". And that was his direct quote.
