SEC Champ, B1G Champ, ACC Champ, BIG XII Champ and PAC XII Champ. Now you have 3 slots left. Maybe a non P5 team slips in, but more often than not the runner up from one of the P5 conferences gets in.

That means a bigger oppty to make the championship game, more money for the conference, more prestige for the conference. No one is going to give that up to have four "super" conferences just the fans can have a simplified play off.
