If true, this isn't the worst outcome in the world.
Big 12 expansion that didn't include BYU would have been far worse. This leaves the door open for the Big 12 to implode, which would shake up the entire CFB landscape in a way that might benefit BYU. In my mind, the worst thing that came out of this round of apparent non-expansion was the pushback from the LGBT lobby. It's clear that, barring some major shift in the Honor Code and/or the church, this issue might be what keeps BYU out again when the next major shift occurs (likely 2025-26).
