If fans were strictly yelling to call timeout because they thought the clock was going to run all the way down to zero, then I agree that they are idiots. But, many fans might've actually known what they were talking about. BYU should've (or at least could've) called time out with about even seconds to go since it was only third down. If you get a clean snap on third down and kick the field goal, at the most there is two or three seconds left and you squib kick the kick off as the final play. But if the snap or hold are bobbled on third down, the holder can spike the ball and still have an opportunity to attempt a field goal again on fourth down. That is a very common and smart thing that many NFL and college coaches do at the end of the game if they have a time out and it is not fourth down. Not all fans that were yelling to call timeout were idiots.
