When did Tom Brady win the starting job at Michigan?
IIRC, it wasn't until something like the 3rd or 4th game of his senior year. During his first 3 years of college he was viewed as a guy with NFL size and and NFL arm who couldn't read defenses and make the checkdown throws. And then suddenly late in his senior year the game slowed down for him and he began to read defenses well. He didn't have enough of a body of work to go early in the draft so he went in the 7th round or something. The rest is history.
So with all that said, I'm not sure that we're not STARTING a Tom Brady.
