We got a silver bead if it got below freezing, and a gold bead for below zero

If he has a decent sleeping bag, he'll be fine. If he has the right gear but doesn't take it, it's his fault. But, since this is not common for you to get cold weather like this you should probably help him pack. But again, as long as he has a sleeping bag rated for 0 or 10, he'll be fine.
