That's usually how people often use it. Whatever higher power they believe in (even if it is just karma) somehow caused it to happen. Though I think it might be the case SOMETIMES, I certainly don't believe that it is always the case. The reason may be more random than that, and it is hard to deal with.

I return to my earlier post, though, that it can definitely have a "reason" inasmuch as we make meaning out of the experience from which we either suffer even more or grow and develop from it. I'm a big fan of Viktor Frankl in this area.
