Former Band Member Thoughts
I was lucky to have been in the band during the Detmer era. The marching band is part of college football. It seems that while the band is performing, most people are staring at their phones or getting something to eat. Back in the 80's and 90's, the crowd took more of an interest in the halftime show. At the end of the Miami football game, and after the crowd had stormed the field, they stayed and cheered the marching band as we played for almost an hour after the game. The fans huddled in the end zone and cheered. Today, things are different. Cellphones take away a lot from the game. The last game I went to, most people in my section had their phones out and some were not even paying attention to the game at all. Now that LES is updating the wifi, it will get even worse. But, the band is filled with talented musicians that practice for hours memorizing the music while marching to formations. The band members still play their hearts out and give it their all at each game and, I believe, they would be missed if the they were gone.
