In 2010, the BYU offense was bad. The defense was bad. After a 1-4 start Bronco fired Hill and took over the D and Anae reinvented the BYU offense.
In their 31-16 loss to USU, Heaps threw the ball 54 times. In their next game, the Cougars beat SDSU using a ground and pound offense and only threw the ball 22 times. After the philosophy change, BYU went 6-2 and averaged 33 points per game and threw the ball an average of 28 times per game. In the first 5 games BYU averaged 15.2 points per game.
The point is that a good coach will be able to find a way to make what he has work. If what you like doing won't work, find something that will with the personel you have. I think USU will be telling. If Anae was able to make changes to create at least a functional offense, Detmer should (and I think will) be able to do the same.
