Face it. Ty's numbers were mostly generated against lower level competition than was have faced this season so far. If we were playing against those types of teams, 2nd and 10 and even 3rd and 10 is not as big of a deal. Against the last 3 opponents, it has been the kiss of death.
The best WAC teams back in those days were not as good as the better G5 teams now. They just weren't. Against the bulk of our competition then, Ty could sit back in the pocket and look at every route on the field. He was rarely rushed / hurried and almost never touched unless we played the better competition.
We had one big win against a legitimately top tier team (who showed up to Provo thinking they had the game already won). The games Detmer played against other big time teams (FSU/PSU (twice)/UCLA / TA&M / even Oregon back then) they would generally stuff the run and then put a TON of pressure on the QB. Guys might have been a little more open because Ty played back when the refs wouldn't allow DBs to manhandle the receivers, like they are allowed to do now, but with the exception of that Miami game and the PSU bowl game, that wide open O was not so impressive against top tier Defenses.
