The top tier teams Detmer played (that you mentioned) were better than Utah and LSU. Utah will not be a top tier team, they are solid but not great. LSU looked pretty bad last week, so who knows.
Sure Detmer's numbers were not the same as lower competition, but that is the same for nearly anyone. His numbers were not close to as bad as his offensive passing numbers these days. We were not close to being shut out. The teams played have been tough, but the numbers are horrid and nothing near what is shown below.
Point being the numbers were not close to this horrid. Look at the numbers from the teams you mention:
FSU - 229 passing 2 TD 1 INT
UCLA - 337 passing 2 TD 2 INT
PSU (1989) - 576 passing 2 TD 2 INT
PSU (1991) 158 passing 1 TD 1 INT
Oregon(1989) 470 passing 3 TD 2 INT
Oregon (1990) 442 passint 2 TD 5 INT
A&M 120 passing 1 TD 1 INT (did not play the full game due to injury)
Not mentioned:
Iowa (#10) - 350 passing 2 TD 1 INT
