I agree this post--assuming the system is sound, I'm for taking the medicine now

Assuming that the pro-style system BYU is trying to implement will be successfully implemented and the team will see success on the field because of the system, I'm willing to swollow the pill now get through with the medicine as soon as possible. Right now BYU seems to be in a netherworld of either trying to win now using using out-of-system plays better suited for the current out-of-system players or focus on implementing a system that is better in the long run so that the underclassmen and new in-system recruits will have several years of development in the system before they start to get significant playing time. I wouldn't want the old system to become a crutch hampering long term development.

The benefits of having a consistent system should be clear from last week's game. Wisconsin is a school that under Barry Alvarez chose a system suited for the types of players they can recruit (big, strong Midwestern boys) and has continued to use that system since turning the program around over 20 years ago. At the time of his hire, Alvarez was a first-time head coach inheriting at Wisconsin team that won only 9 games across the four previous years while averaging 35-40K attendance in Camp Randall (the 5th quarter became popular because the band played better than the football team!). Success didn't come overnight--Wisconsin only won 11 games over his first 3 seasons (1-10 then 2 5-6s). In Alvarez's fourth year, Wisconsin went 10-1-1 winning the Rose Bowl, their first visit since 1963.

It may take a few years, but I think BYU will be able to implement a similar system with similar success.
