BYU football has made it clear that independence > G5. That position minimizes

the success and accomplishments of someone who has a fragile ego who played in an inferior conference. Buck doesn't want to admit that what BYU is doing is better in the same way that a high school player doesn't like to see his Alma mater do better than his team did the year after he graduates.

His opinion doesn't count on this one 1. Because he's jaded with personal pride and 2. Because there's no question that he's wrong.
