Simple logic should tell you...if you bought an S&P index fund for instance

then your portfolio did triple.

Whether they chose poorer investments, buy in and sell out, or do any other number of not smart things all play a factor I guess.

Is there something you would like to propose? I don't understand your "Why is that?" question.
