Softness comes from coaching. And that doesn't mean BYU coaches necessarily, but when has Quincy Lewis ever
sent BYU a softie? None that I can recall. He's not soft. When has Craig Drury ever sent BYU a softie? None. Drury is not soft. Those are your two most recent best high school coaches in Utah. One of the hard parts of college coaching is probably getting kids that aren't used to that type of coaching in and trying to build that toughness from the ground up. Just skill training/lifting hard alone does not build the dog.

Let's move to college.....what happened to Utah basketball? How about Indiana? What about Witchita State? The jerks got too jerky basically....but the culture of toughness went with them. And obviously those guys all had some X's and O's smarts to boot. There are other seperators in coaching too, but I would bet most of these guys winning tourney games are closer to being old school jerks in practices than not.

Again, this is not commentary on Pope. I think he has some of that necessary jerk to him....maybe even to the point that being at BYU bridles some of it.
