And that's it. They didn't get phones at all until high school. They have a robust social life, and are mature enough to understand why they don't get iPhones, or smart phones. As for ridicule, if it's happened, it hasn't affected them. We have taught them from a young age if you want to be different from average, you have to make different choices than average.
Did the oldest whine when everybody got iPhones in 6th grade? yes. Did she get over it? Yes. Now as a junior she has perspective to understand why and is ok with it.
