People aren't thinking this through. They seem to think there is no alternative.
There certainly IS an alternative. Europe has no sports club affiliations attached to universities like we do. It's not necessary for the academic institution at all, and the further the players move away from being students toward being pay-for-play professional athletes, the less lots of people like me feel any attachment to a college's athletic program. I'm a Legacy III member of the CC, but I wouldn't give one cent for NIL and NIL's fallout has me questioning whether I want to spend the $10k per year I spend on CC membership and tickets any longer.

Those of you who are all in on having semi-pro athletic teams for academic institutions, more power to you. Just recognize that a lot of people who would never have thought of ceasing BYU fandom before NIL are very seriously considering doing so now.
