RE: Here's what Daniel Sorenson said
Like I said, I don't necessarily disagree with anything he said, and he only said what many people think. But do you want him to say things that will end up on every locker room wall of every team we play as motivation?

There are a lot of reasons why this type of thing. Here's just a couple:

1) Saying we are going to Ol Miss to dominate or that he wants other teams to fear us before we have even played 1 down this season is a problem for everyone we play and should be a sign to Bronco he needs to reign in the media comments, and/or refocus this team.

2) We all realize there are a lot of people who dislike BYU because it is a Mormon school and they hate Mormonism. They already want to see us lose for that reason. That is the main reason we are listed, fairly consistently, amongst the most hated teams in America. You don't think him saying we want to win so more people will respect or become interested in our religion makes those same people want to see us lose more? Don't you think that may even add to the number of people who want to see us lose? Doesn't that defeat the whole purpose.

Take the Davies incident for an example. We suspended Davis right before a run to the National Championship because we were trying to stay true to our values and not compromise them for winning. We did it with the best interests of the school, church and Davies in mind because it was the right thing to do. As a result, we got a lot of positive press and gained the respect of many.

Imagine if the press conference we announced his suspension went like this:

BYU makes its announcement and explanation.

Reporter: Mr. TH, why would you do this at this time and suspend him right before the start of the NCAA Tournament? Why not wait and suspend him after the season, or not at all? After all, what he did was minor, or some may say not a problem at all.

TH: Well we realize all that is at stake here and the chance to win a national championship is very important to us. However, we felt that by doing this now, at this time, is not only the right thing to do, but we are hoping that our church gets a lot of good publicity and hope that it brings a lot of attention and interest to the church by doing so.

If TH has said that, the public back lash would have been deadly harsh. What DS said isn't exactly the same, but there is a parrallel and it only leaves BYU in a position to be scrutinized more for it. However, all of us were very happy about the positive media attention it brought the school and the church. But publicly stating that as our purpose would have had the exact opposite effect.

Bottom line, better left unsaid or in a far different way.

3)"white boys" should have totally been avoided. The possible disrespect to Apo, Eason, Hoffman, Sampon and so forth aside, that is a stigma that continually hurts us and this does nothing to help that. WE all know what he meant, but many others can and will take it the wrong way or use it against us.

bottome line, a more quiet, humble and subtle approach in the public eye will be better for us in every way from football to it's overall purpose
