They aren't reading statements in the Daily Herald, either
Even BYU fans don't read the Provo Daily Herald all that much.
I doubt a Herald article will make its way to the Ole Miss fan base.
But even if it does, then so what? It all comes down to winning, anyway. If BYU wins, then Ole Miss fans might be impressed by BYU, remember Sorenson's quote, and investigate further. If BYU loses, then Ole Miss fans won't be impressed by BYU, anyway, and will be no more unlikely to investigate further than they were before reading Sorenson's quote.
It doesn't seem like there's a downside to Sorenson's quote, other than providing bulletin board material to an Ole Miss team that shouldn't need extra motivation, since they are a proud SEC team.
