wants nothing to do with it is a miss-characterization.
It is well documented by the Deseret News, in a multi-part story about Fred and Kyle Whittingham a couple years back, after Fred's death, how difficult a decision it was for Kyle, between Utah and BYU as HC (head coach, not honor code).
Kyle reportedly had accepted the BYU job on three different occations during a couple day mental gymnastics session during the decision. It was only after fasting a prayer and a temple session during that time that Kyle finally chose Utah and has never looked back.
The honor code was not a factor in his deicision. He is quoted as saying that the HC may make it difficult to attract the kind of athletes needed to win at the highest level but it didn't play a factor in his decision. It is just a true statement. It was NOT quoted as a reason he didn't go to BYU as their HC.
Bronco has done a great job with the HC, no question. I also have to admit, Whitt was right. Bronco's teams are less competetive now than when he first came on. He now has his kids, his recruits, players he has developed. There are fewer BYU players going to the NFL, and Bronco is consistently losing to good teams.
It is what it is. BYU is unique and should put these things first. It's what makes BYU special, really.
