Nice circular logic

Taking two years off from basketball is a huge advantage because it makes Zero sense that it wouldn’t.

Your anecdote about breaking mission rules and playing with your companion every day is not remotely compelling.

Any deep tourney run by BYU has been when they are lead by a players who didn’t take two years off. It sets them back. They do it because there are things more important than basketball.
