The total number of pneumonia deaths is not normal right now.
The CDC estimates flu deaths and pneumonia deaths together. The hospitalization data they use to make those estimates is available on their website going back to 2009. The worst year since 2009 for flu/pneumonia deaths was 2017-2018. At it's peak, that season, about 850 people died per day from flu/pneumonia. That high rate of deaths per day only lasted about a week. As you know, we've had several days in a row already of well over 850 deaths this year. So, at least right now, COVID-19 is killing people at a faster rate than flu/pneumonia ever did.
